Hilda (Dude) Emmel

Age: 91 February 16, 1919 – November 19, 2010 The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Hilda (Dude) Emmel, age 91 of St. Cloud, will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 23, at St. Mary’s Help of Christians Catholic Church in St. Augusta.  Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud.  Hilda died Friday at the St. Benedicts Senior Center.  There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM, until the time of the service, Tuesday at the church in St. Augusta.Hilda was born February 16, 1919 in Woodriver, IL, to Chester and Julia (Bales) Custer.  She married Frank Steffes on Decemberer 26, 1941 in St. Cloud.  The couple lived in Duluth and Wheaton before moving to St. Cloud.  Frank died in 1964.  Hilda married Ed Emmel in 1967, he died in 1992.  Hilda was a homemaker and when Ed retired, they spent their winters in Arizona.  She was an avid golfer and she and Ed played cards.  She is a member of St. Mary’s Help of Christian’s Catholic Church.Hilda is survived by her children; Gary (Eileen) Steffes, Sauk Rapids; Mary (Doug) Schwinghammer, St. Cloud; Patricia (Bernard) Baier, Minneapolis; Kathleen (Jeff) Grant, Rogers; Eunice Koch, Ely; her step children, Dale (Carol) Emmel, Sauk Center; Kay (Del) Sherman, New Hope.   She is also survived by her brother, Hershel Custer, Darien, IL, 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.Hilda is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Frank Steffes; her second husband, Ed Emmel, her sister, Eulah Custer and her brother Sam Custer.The family would like to thank the staff at Benedict Homes and the care givers at the St. Benedict’s Senior Community.
