I first knew Sheila when she taught my daughter Janet Ogden at Sibley Elementary School in Northfield, MN. Later Sheila was moved to Greenvale Park Elementary School where I was currently teaching. We shared the same office for several years.
Sheila took teaching seriously. She was well prepared. She enjoyed starting children out.
She also had many good stories to tell about growing up in a large family.
When Sheila taught at Sibley, I would make it a point to stop in her room in the morning, before the kids arrived, and tell her a joke or just say something that would get her laughing. If you weren’t quite awake before the laugh, you most certainly were after she laughed for a bit. She had a way of lighting up the place. A great teacher, friend, active NEA member. She left her mark.
I first knew Shelia when she was my daughter Janet’s teacher at Sibley.
Later she wa transfered to Greenvale where she taught first grade and transition room. We shared an office for several years. Shelia was a serious teacher. She like things neat and orderly.
She had a great laugh and could remember many good teacher and kid stories. I learned a lot about how she grew up in a large family and how she valued education.
After retirement, Sheila took several trips with me and others when we went to Barndson, MO. and Breezy Point.

I just read yesterday of Sheila’s passing.
There is no reason I could not have made her funeral except for not knowing.
My daughter, Reenie Rae was a firecracker. After K she went to Sheila’s transition class.
This was best thing to happen to my little girl, she thrived with her!
At our first conference (which I approached gingerly) was great!
Sheila was able to recognize her abilities.
During the meeting Sheila commented on how much my daughter’s facial features and body movements were so alike., she was observant.
We made a deal right then.
Sheila would teach her to read (Reenie Rae was having trouble) and I would get her more than high energy out by keeping her busy in the horse barn!
IT WORKED!
I ended up working in the school district for 20 years, seeing Sheila often, we always shared a laugh, her famous laugh we all love as we did her too.
My little girl is now 44 years old, a beader, artist and cowgirl barrel racer in Oklahoma.
We owe Sheila alot, for her gift to help children.
I will never forget what she did for us, she was a treasure…… .
