Anyone who knew Paul Opatz will be shocked and saddened with the news of his unexpected death on Wednesday, May 19th. Paul was known for his constant generosity, warmth and humor. He radiated happiness and optimism, and his unfailing good cheer enriched the lives of so many. He also suffered from severe and debilitating pain, which often went unnoticed to those around him, and which led him to end his life prematurely. The loss of Paul is devastating, but the goodness and joy that he shared will live on.
Paul was a loving husband, father, and brother. Most recently, and to his great joy, he had officially become the best grandpa ever, as we all knew he would.
Paul is preceded in death by his father, Ralph Opatz, and mother, Patricia (Gits) Opatz. Paul is survived by his wife of 39 years, Diane Dockendorf Opatz and sons, Phillip Opatz, Minneapolis, MN, and Russell Opatz (Margaret Osgood), Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as his Granddaughter, Margot Opatz. He is also survived by his siblings Mary Opatz Herges (John), Joe Opatz, Ann Opatz (Mic Stowell), Margaret Dittrich (Mark), Charlie Opatz (Gail), John Opatz (Laurie), Andy Opatz (Linda Scherer), Pat Opatz (Stephanie Hawkinson), and Clare Opatz-Osgood (Joe).
The Catholic Mass for Paul will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 26th , at Christ Church of Newman Center in St. Cloud. There will be a visitation from 10-11:00 AM on Wednesday at the church before the Mass. Arrangements are with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in St. Cloud.
In lieu of flowers, Paul’s family invites you to make a memorial gift benefiting anyone in need, including efforts to address food security, mental health and housing, all of which were causes Paul had a tremendous passion for.

I worked with Paul at Fitzharris Athletic in college. He was a kind, even-tempered, easy going and always positive soul. I am so sorry to hear this sad news about your loss. My thoughts are with all your family.
Our deepest sympathy to your family. Paul always had something to say and usually with a smile. He will be missed. Keep all the wonderful memories close to your heart! Keeping your family in our prayers!
I knew Paul since the early years of grade school. We went through Cub scouts, football and hockey together. He was a gentle soul except on the ice. But his love for music is probably what influenced me the most. I was fortunate enough to be able to play music with him the last couple years. He was an excellent guitar player as well as a fantastic Singer. It was so good being around him. We will all miss you Paul. My thoughts are with his family today.
💔 Sending our love to Diane and all of Paul’s family and friends! Rest in Peace, Paul, until we meet again!
I met Paul when he was dating my dear friend, Diane. Honorable, humble and kind. Always had good things to talk about. Not just chit chat. Nature, handyman, good listener. All our love and prayers to you, Diane, Phillip Russell and family and friends.

I am so sorry to read this news. I attend the Newman Center and I sang in the choir, for a time, many years ago. I want to send my sympathies to you, I also pray that Paul is Resting in Peace. It’s very sad to lose the musicians , since sometimes music is the only comfort we feel we have…. God Bless You Opatz family. He was a gift to all who knew him.
Paul was and is kindness. Always a smile and a kind word. He radiated a good spirit. Knew him since grade school. Got into some good mischievous activities together.
Taught me how to skate. He was most everyone’s friend. Best to his family. They all are good people just like Paul.
